The National Investigative Agency (NIA) on Monday arrested an absconding suspect accused of allegedly organising a terrorist camp in Kerala’s Kannur district.

24-year-old Azharudheen alias Azhar, a resident of Narath, belongs to the controversial outfit in Kerala, People’s Front of India (PFI).

He was arrested on October 9 for “entering into a criminal conspiracy to impart training to the youth by using explosives and weapons, with an intention to prepare them for terrorist activities and to commit acts endangering the unity and integrity of the nation,” as per a statement by the NIA.

The arrested accused will be produced before a trial court at Ernakulam on Tuesday.

On September 21, the Ernakulam court had held guilty 21 accused persons belonging to the PFI. They were held guilty of various offences including criminal conspiracy, membership of unlawful assembly, possession of arms and explosive substances, inciting communal disharmony, assertions prejudicial to national integration besides organising the terrorist camp.

The case was first registered by the state police, before it was taken over by the NIA in August 2013.

The Union Home Ministry is contemplating a “crackdown” on Kerala-based Popular Front of India (PFI) and mulling a ban on it for its alleged links with terror activities, a charge strongly denied by the outfit.

The move comes after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) submitted a report on the PFI to the ministry claiming that the group has been involved in terror acts, including running terror camps and making bombs, and it was a fit case to be declared banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The cases which the NIA cited for PFIs alleged involvement in terror acts are: chopping of a professors palm in Keralas Idukki district, organising a training camp in Kannur from where the NIA allegedly seized swords, country- made bombs and ingredients for making IEDs, murder of RSS leader Rudresh in Bengaluru and the plans to carry out terror attacks in South India by involving another outfit, Islamic State Al-Hindi.
